Rain and rides: Updates from the Welsh equestrian scene #003
I was lucky to be at Defender Burghley Horse Trials last weekend to watch Ros Canter make history with her GOAT of a horse, Lordships Graffalo. Sadly, it wasn't to be at Burghley for North-Wales-based Emily King, who was hotly tipped for a placing on Valmy Biats. They had an unfortunate 20 faults at the water early on in the course, and Emily has said she will re-route this autumn, and we wish her the best of luck.
Staying with eventing, the BBC has confirmed it will broadcast next week's FEI European Eventing Championships on Saturday and Sunday from Blenheim, so that’s your weekend viewing sorted.
Good luck also to all the Welsh riders competing at the LeMieux National Dressage Championships at Somerford Park (11- 14 September)
Here’s a quick round-up of equestrian news and info from Wales this week:
🌧️ Owing to the combination of high tides and a week of (albeit much need) wet weather, flood alerts have been in place along much of the Wales coast. We hope no-one has been badly affected. Keep up to date with the latest from NRW here: https://tinyurl.com/5xrs3n22
🐎 A memorial ride is being held in Pembrokeshire this Sunday, September 14, to remember keen horse riding teenager Sally Allen, who sadly died in a car crash in July. Riders will be decked out in yellow and sunflowers to honour the caring teen. More info: https://tinyurl.com/mtv492r7
☔ However, the poor forecast has caused the postponement of the Llanwnned Farmers and Vale of Clettwr Pony Club fun ride on Sunday. Check all your events are going ahead before you load up.
The Welsh Pony & Cob Society announced this week that sadly Eirian Thomas of Llanwnnen Stud has passed away after a long illness. Among the tributes online was: "The horse world has lost one of the best horsemen about".
