Shows cancelled, vaccine checks as flu outbreak spreads

Shows are being postponed and venues shut down to visitors, amid concern over strangles and equine flu.

Here are some of the venues and organisations who have announced they are restricting activities in response to the outbreak across south west Wales:

  • The Gower Riding Club has cancelled both its shows for May, following more cases of equine influenza being announced today.

  • Bailey Farm has said it is “on lockdown for the forseeable”, cancelling all arena hires and events, although they have no symptomatic horses at the site.

  • Cwmaman RC Area 21 Dressage qualifier on 23 May is postponed, as is the Showjumping Show at Penskyber on 17 May.

  • Tivyside Riding Club has cancelled its show "given the current situation".

  • Little Mill Equestrian has suspended all shows for the next 14 days, due to the "prevalence of strangles and now the increased spread of flu".

  • Sunnybank Equestrian Centre in Caerphilly is reminding visitors of its strict biosecurity measures, which includes up-to-date vaccinations.

  • At Islwyn Riding Club Show on Sunday, organisers said they will be carrying out random passport checks for vaccination status.

  • Other centres not affected have said they won't be taking in new liveries while the outbreak is ongoing, with some introducing biosecurity measures such as disinfecting boots and hands.

  • Bridgend County Show is enforcing a strict policy of vaccinated entrants only.

  • St Clears YFC Agricultural Show is "monitoring developments" and urging owners to vaccinate their horses.

Meanwhile Ynysmond Equestrian Centre that has been battling strangles over the last few weeks now says it is clear of the disease, although still taking precautions, inlcuding postponing a planned eventing competition.

Several yards have publicly announced they are battling the virus, with many pointing to Barley Saturday, Cardigan, as a possible site of transmission.

Elsewhere Spirit Equine saddle and bridle fitter and equine massage practitioner is pausing appointments temporarily amid the outbreak.

Cotts Equine Hospital has reassured clients that it has ample supplies of the flu vaccine, and reiterated the importance of immunisation to avoid any further cases.
